The English along with Welsh Placed in the Same Group for RWC 2027 Down Under

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The pool stage draw was conducted by rugby icons such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England and their Welsh counterparts find themselves placed in an identical group for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a highly-anticipated early encounter in Australia. They are joined in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This draw recalls their memorable meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at England's home ground played a part in the English team's shock group stage elimination.

Key Pool Pairings

Ireland alongside Scotland also share a pool once again, replicating the situation from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, Ireland claimed a convincing victory, with Scotland failing to advance to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Portugal, both made a strong impression as underdogs in the last World Cup, complete that same group.

Significantly, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet holders and world number one South Africa before the showpiece match, assuming the South Africans top their assigned pool.

Knockout Implications

Should the groups play out according to the current world rankings, other leading contenders like New Zealand and France would remain separated from both England and Ireland until the final.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the other top-ranked nation on that side of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Face Major Opener

Tournament hosts Australia have been drawn together with their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Pool A.

Australia will kick off the tournament in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee fixture aimed at launch the competition.

In other groups, reigning champions the Springboks have been paired with Italy, Georgia and Romania. France are grouped with Japan, 2031 hosts the USA and Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Argentina will take on Fiji, Spain and the Canadian team as the World Cup expands to 24 teams from the twenty who competed in France.

This edition will feature a round of 16 stage for the first time in the competition's history.

Although the victor of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the game's biggest beasts initially, they will have to face the runner-up from Pool B – most likely the Italians – in the first knockout round.

Four of the other six pool winners will face a team that finished third from the pool stages.
